PROJECT SUMMARY

Facility Spill Remediation

Remediation & Reclamation

Resolve Earthworks & Environmental Ltd. was awarded the contract to remediate a spill at an operational facility. The work area was situated in between live product lines and pumps, rail tracks and loading racks, and plant roadways, thus posing significant access issues. The spill was also located in a plant stormwater ditch and extended around underground utilities and under the plant roadways.

Resolve was awarded the project based on its detailed work plan and proven safety record. The project scope included the following:

  • Coordination with environmental consultant, client engineers and plant Health & Safety managers to develop the safest and most cost-effective work plan to complete the remedial activities.

  • Daylighting of electrical and water lines, and temporary disconnection of the electrical lines.

  • Develop in conjunction with Plant Operations a Traffic Accommodation Plan to facilitate truck and equipment access to the work area while not impeding surrounding rail and vehicle traffic.

  • Removal of water from drainage ditches via vacuum truck and pumping to adjacent ditches where appropriate.

  • Excavation and stockpiling of non-impacted overburden soils.

  • Excavate, load, transport and dispose of ~3,000 tonnes impacted soils to a Class II landfill facility.

  • Removal of impacted soils under pipe racks via hydrovac.

  • Construct temporary truck access over drainage ditch to facilitate dump truck access to loading area.

  • Import, place and compact excavated areas with clay fill and gravel.

  • Replacement of gravel fill under pipe racks using a Telebelt and hand placement.

  • Assist environmental consultant during delineation drilling activities by managing drill cuttings and backfilling boreholes with sand.

  • Removal of site debris and disposal into plant waste bins.

  • Restoration and regrading of drainage ditches.

  • Restoration of roadways including installation of woven geotextiles and import, placement, and compaction of gravels and regrading to design elevations.
