Former Retail Site Downstream Remediation

Remediation & Reclamation

Resolve Earthworks & Environmental Ltd. was awarded the contract to remediate a former retail fueling site and select lands off property. The site was limited for space, and the excavation was located immediately adjacent to Town roads and sidewalks, as well as a neighbouring business and building that remained operational.


Resolve was awarded the project based on its overall price and proposed work plan, as well as its safety record and proven capabilities on similar projects.


The project scope included the following:

  • Coordination with site owner, environmental consultant, Town project manager, utility owners, and adjacent businesses to develop a work plan agreeable to all parties, and acquire all required permits and approvals.

  • Coordination with theTown Public Works Department to arrange temporary site access and egress points.

  • Complete utility location and property boundary survey.

  • Disconnection of former water service line into the site to facilitate excavation on site, and installation of new curb stop outside property line to allow for future reinstatement service line.

  • Removal and offsite disposal of miscellaneous debris and waste concrete from site and adjacent property and uncovered within the excavation.

  • Excavation and stockpiling of ~400m3 overburden soils.

  • Excavation, transport and disposal of ~1,800 mt of petroleum hydrocarbon (PHC) impacted soils to a Class II landfill.

  • Slot-cut west and north excavation walls to allow for vertical excavation adjacent to neighboring building and Town roadway. Backfill one area with fillcrete due to close proximity to building foundation.

  • Backfill and compaction of excavated area using stockpiled overburden materials and imported clean fill.

  • Site restoration including supply and place clean topsoil washed rock and crushed gravel materials at surface and hydroseed topsoil areas.
