PROJECT SUMMARY

Remote Access Former Gas Plant Remediation

Remediation & Reclamation, Environmental Construction, Decommissioning & Demolition

Resolve Earthworks & Environmental Ltd. was awarded the contract to remediate a former gas plant located in a remote location in Northern Alberta. The physical location of the site presented numerous challenges including but not limited to: site access via ~60km of gravel road; long distance from any major city; and unpredictable local weather patterns. Site remediation works were completed over two summer working seasons.

Resolve was awarded the project based on its overall price and proposed work plan, as well as its safety record and proven capabilities on similar projects.

The project scope included the following:

  • Coordination with the environmental consultant and owner to develop a work plan agreeable to all parties.

  • Completion of a test pitting program several months in advance of site remediation works.

  • Provision of site office and associated utilities/facilities.

  • Post-winter site preparation including dewatering low areas with standing water, surface water drainage improvements, and soil conditioning and site road maintenance to facilitate equipment movement across site.

  • Construction of a ~100m x 100m contaminated soil treatment cell including site grading, construction of perimeter berms and surface water collection sump, lining the cell and sump with 30mil LLDPE liner, and installation of trafficable layer over the liner in the base of the cell.

  • Excavation and stockpiling of ~3,700m3 overburden soils.

  • Excavation, transport on-site, placement in windrows and ex-situ soil treatment via ALLU bucket and/or bucket casting of ~8,200m3 impacted soils.

  • Conditioning of wet soils via excavator bucket casting.

  • Backfill and compaction of all excavated overburden and treated impacted soils.

  • Decommissioning of the contaminated soil treatment cell including stripping trafficable layer, processing and offsite disposal of liner materials, and regrading berms and trafficable layer to pre-construction conditions.

  • Excavation, processing, and removal from site of various building / facility materials encountered including concrete pads/foundations, steel piles, fence materials, and other miscellaneous debris.

  • Site contouring and reclamation activities completed in fall of 2022.

  • Assist with planning of future reclamation activities at site.
